Pupils stand outside the boarding hostel at Timaru Girls’ High School, in the 1920s. The hostel was mainly for out-of-town pupils – many from farming families – who lived too far away for daily travel. Another attraction for some was that urban high schools had a more academic curriculum than the rural district high schools.
