Kauri litter

Kauri forest produces a deep layer of litter, including bark, branchlets, cones and gum, which is slow to decay. This eventually develops into an acidic humus that is slow to release nutrients, including nitrogen. By immobilising nutrients in this way, kauri gains an advantage over other trees – kauri is efficient at using nitrogen and requires much less than other species.
