While the men won fame for New Zealand overseas, the women at home established a strong sense of the distinctive qualities of the New Zealand woman. She was a patient mother and a strong servant of the British Empire, sending parcels of biscuits and knits to the front. After the war, a long-suffering mother was always included in ceremonies to unveil war memorials.
