Story: Hillary, Edmund Percival

Final ascent of Everest

The 1953 Everest team made the ascent up Mt Everest's south-west flank in April and May of that year. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay would eventually be the first climbers to make the final haul to the summit, on 29 May 1953. This image shows the various camps the team set up during their ascent.
