Māori and non-Māori population, 1874–2013

The Māori population of the Whanganui region was overwhelmed early by European settlers and their descendants. However, since the 1960s, Māori have been increasing in number while non-Māori have been declining. In 2013 Māori made up nearly a quarter of the region’s total population.
