Punk rock poster, 1978

Punk rock poster, 1978

The poster for this concert at the State Theatre in Auckland in October 1978 featured the two bands who introduced punk rock to Auckland, the Scavengers and the Suburban Reptiles. Both had formed the previous year, inspired by British and American bands, especially the Sex Pistols, and quickly made Auckland the centre of New Zealand's punk rock scene. The Suburban Reptiles, led by Simon Grigg, achieved some notoriety when they were reported to be setting out to strangle seagulls down at Auckland's wharf. Shortly before this concert the Suburban Reptiles broke up – so they never showed up for the gig. The third band, the Enemy, fronted by Chris Knox, were from Dunedin and shortly after this concert added two band members and became Toy Love.
