Story: Sport and the nation

New Zealand cartoon about 1905 All Black team (2nd of 2)

New Zealand cartoon about 1905 All Black team

In this cartoon, drawn by New Zealander Trevor Lloyd at the end of the 1905 All Black tour, New Zealand is no longer represented as a young cub. Now New Zealand has become a large moa shaking the neck of a very scruffy and frightened British lion. The scores shown in the cartoon are not quite correct: the 39 points were scored by teams from Ireland, Scotland and Wales as well as England, and the All Blacks scored 830 points, not 829, against those teams.
