This issue of Siren, published in 2008, celebrates the 21st anniversary of the New Zealand Prostitutes' Collective (NZPC). Since its first photocopied black-and-white issue in November 1988, Siren had developed into a glossy, colourful, professionally produced magazine. The cover advertises the NZPC website, and the red umbrella is an international symbol of sex workers' rights. This birthday edition of the magazine was produced five years after the passing of the Prostitution Reform Act in June 2003 – a significant achievement for the NZPC, and internationally innovative in its decriminalisation of sex work.
