‘The burning region’

The summer of 1885–86 was extremely dry across the whole country. Bush fires in Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay caused considerable damage. This extract from the Taranaki Herald of 9 January 1886 is a first-hand account of a fire near Inglewood.
