Herds of feral goats roam around the King Country, and people who travel on the region's minor roads will invariably encounter a goat or two at some stage. Artist Peter McIntyre included sketches of goats in his 1972 book Kakahi New Zealand, about Kākahi, because the animals were a common feature of the landscape he loved to paint. This sketch captures the human–goat encounter well – in particular, the animal's stare before it takes off to hide in the bushes.
