Attachment to Britain – a key element in New Zealand’s political culture for much of its history – is captured in the stained glass window at the Arts Centre in Christchurch. Many people from British history are depicted, including William Shakespeare and James Cook. Most New Zealand settlers had British ancestry. The window survived the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes but was temporarily removed.
