Dunollie was originally a private subdivision on the outskirts of Rūnanga, built to provide accommodation for miners working at the nearby Point Elizabeth State Mine. It was a commercial venture by Scotsman Alexander Macdougall, a business crony of Premier Richard Seddon. Although it was enthusiastically advertised as ‘a real bona fide high-class Town’, the sections were actually smaller than those in Rūnanga.
