Story: Traditional Māori songs – waiata tawhito

Haka pōwhiri, 1946

This extract from a 1946 government newsreel shows a haka pōwhiri at Ngāruawāhia in January 1946. The pōwhiri was to welcome home members of the 28th (Māori) Battalion. The haka party includes a large number of women, since so many of the men had been overseas on war service.
