This white triangular beacon with its cross and light was located at the Westport harbour mouth where the Buller River enters the sea. It was replaced by one of a new design and shape in 1998. Highly visible beacons such as these are used by fishing boats all around the New Zealand coast to line up their approach into difficult or small harbours.
