Haast honoured

A studio portrait of a heavily bearded man in later life, with nine medals pinned to his breast.

In this studio portrait, taken in Germany in February 1887, Julius von Haast wears his German consul’s uniform and medals and decorations he has been awarded by the British, French, Italian, German and Austrian authorities since 1865. The two large decorations separate from the medal bar are the Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (United Kingdom, 1886). The decorations on the bar, from left, are: Kaiserlicher Orden der Eisernen Krone (Austria, 1874); Officeir de l’Instruction Publique (Ordres des Palmes académiques) (France, 1886); Kaiserlich-Österreichischer Franz-Joseph-Orden (Austria, 1865); Ordine della Corona d’Italia (Italy, 1879); Herzoglich Sachsen-Ernestinischer Hausorden (Germany, 1868); Großherzoglich Heissischer Ludgwigsorden (Germany, 1877); Verdienstorden Philipps des Großmütigen (Germany, 1868).
