A group enjoys the Waiuku Rotary Club family picnic day at Kaiaua in the Firth of Thames in 1966. They are using a chilly bin to keep the food fresh. New Zealanders use the term 'chilly bin' for a cool box or cooler, known as an 'esky' in Australia. Early chilly bins, such as the one in the photo, were often simply made of polystyrene foam. More durable versions are hard plastic surrounding a layer of insulating material.
