Teachers and pupil-teachers

Teachers and pupil-teachers

In the 19th century pupil-teachers – older students who taught younger children while themselves still studying – were employed on low wages to supplement the teaching workforce. In this 1896 photograph of the staff of College Street School, Palmerston North, pupil-teachers are on either end of each row.
