New Zealand Natives rugby team, 1889

Before the national rugby team was selected by a colony-wide rugby union, New Zealand was represented by teams such as the Natives, made up mainly but not entirely of Māori, who toured England, Australia and New Zealand in 1888–89. The captain was Joe Warbrick (second from left, back row).
