Story: Taranaki places

Waitara bridge gardens

Waitara bridge gardens

After Waitara’s sprawling freezing works closed in 1997 and were demolished, the riverside West Quay, near the town’s bridge, was redesigned, with artworks celebrating the river and its people. The area is also part of an extensive heritage trail. In 2009 a portion of the Waitara wharves was reconstructed next to the riverside gardens.
