In response to the Māori renaissance from the 1970s onwards, some national institutions adopted a bicultural approach. This image shows the marae at Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand, in Wellington, which was carved under the direction of the renowned Māori carver Cliff Whiting. The panels at the front represent Māori stories and traditions, while those at the rear stand for the various non-Māori who have made New Zealand their home.
