Story: Farm families

Woman farmer

Woman farmer

Dairy farmer Jill Bluett fills buckets with milk at her milking shed near Hamilton. Jill feeds about 700 dairy calves every year. Although the number of women farmers has increased, there has been a much bigger increase in women as farm partners with their husbands. This was a common response to the economic difficulties faced by farmers from the mid-1970s. Women either found jobs in town or increased their role on the farm.
