Rangitīaria Dennan and Eleanor Roosevelt

In 1943 Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, toured the South Pacific, where United States forces were deployed in the war against Japan. On her visit to the thermal sights of Whakarewarewa she was escorted by Rangitīaria Dennan (‘Guide Rangi’), the most prominent guide of her generation.
