The Paramount Cafeteria, Courtenay Place, Wellington, 1961

Stergios Papaioanou (left) and George Yiappos fix the menu for the Paramount Cafeteria before opening for business. Before the 1980s, Greek-run restaurants did not offer Greek food, but catered to the rather unimaginative appetites of locally born New Zealanders. Some, however, provided coffee and cakes, giving New Zealanders their first taste of café culture.
