Story: Chatham Islands

Proximity to New Zealand (2nd of 3)

Proximity to New Zealand

The Chatham Islands lie in the South Pacific Ocean, 862 kilometres east of Christchurch and 770 kilometres south-east of Napier. The Chathams are on the other side of the 180th meridian (the basis for the international date line, which has been shifted to allow them to remain on the same day as New Zealand). The islands are about as far from the New Zealand mainland as Berlin is from Paris, Melbourne from Sydney and New York from Cleveland, Ohio.
