Gerard Smyth’s documentary When a city falls gives a vivid impression of the physical damage and human trauma caused by the 22 February 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Smyth was able to capture the event so immediately because he and a team were already shooting a film about the effects of the September 2010 Darfield quake. Many buildings were irreparably damaged and 185 people lost their lives. In 2020 Smyth made a sequel about the rebuilding of Christchurch – When a city rises: the people’s story.
