The 1982 closure of the Pātea freezing works could have led to the death of the town. Salvation came from an unlikely source – the lively song ‘Poi e’, by Dalvanius Prime and Ngoi Pēwhairangi, became a 1984 hit single for the Pātea Māori Club.
