In April 2011, members of Te Whānau-a-Apanui of the northern East Coast took to the sea to protest against a Brazilian company's oil exploration activities in their iwi waters. Their protest was partly based on the grounds that in the ‘management of physical and natural resources, full and balanced account is taken of ... the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.’ (Environment Act 1986). This photo shows a Greenpeace inflatable and the iwi-owned fishing vessel San Pietro out on the water. On the horizon can be seen the oil exploration ship Orient Explorer.
