Leslie Adkin was an amateur archaeologist, ethnologist and photographer who made detailed studies around the Horowhenua and Manawatū regions. The artefacts shown on this page from his photo album include a series of items from Lake Horowhenua, a bailer (tatā or tīheru) from Poroutawhao, an adze (toki) from Waipipi-a-maihi, and the remains of a canoe (waka) at Rangitīkei beach. There is also a photo of the site of Wharingi kāinga (village) at the Manawatū heads and another of two girls from the Ngāti Wehiwehi hāpu at Whakahoro, Horowhenua.
