Refrigerated shipping brought an increasing prosperity to producers of sheep meat and dairy products from the beginning of the 20th century. This encouraged significant private investment in the clearance of the bush and the grassing of the land by exotic pastures. Ōhura near Taumarunui was one area that was opened up, made possible by the public investment in the main trunk railway line.
