Roller derby

Roller derby started in New Zealand in 2007 when Auckland's Pirate City Rollers league began competitive bouts. The television news show 20/20 screened a story on the league that year and this publicity helped spread the new sport throughout New Zealand. In 2013 there were 21 leagues around New Zealand. Here, journalist Hayden Jones briefly explains how roller derby works. The two teams, Dead Wreckoning and Blackheart Bruisers, are part of the Pirate City Rollers league.
