Becoming a republic?

In this television news clip from 1994, Prime Minister Jim Bolger suggests to Parliament that the introduction of the MMP electoral system in 1996 might be the catalyst for New Zealand to take a further constitutional step and become a republic. The suggestion proved to be premature.
