Kōrero: Veterans’ assistance

Nuclear-test veterans, 2007

This 2007 television news clip describes the medical problems experienced by New Zealand veterans of nuclear-weapons tests in the 1950s. More than 500 New Zealand navy personnel witnessed the detonation of nine British hydrogen bombs at Christmas Island, now part of the republic of Kiribati in the northern Pacific. The British government has declined to compensate the veterans for subsequent illnesses, and legal action on this issue was continuing in early 2012.
