Afghan refugees greet waiting family members on their arrival at Auckland International Airport in March 2004. The men had originally been allowed to settle in Australia, but the women and children who followed later were sent by Australian authorities to the Pacific island of Nauru. The New Zealand government provided an opportunity for these divided families to be reunited. By July 2004 New Zealand had allowed 209 Afghans to settle, and many had sponsored members of their families to join them.
