Fossil tree stump (3 o 3)

Fossil tree stump

Fossil tree stumps are found in Murihiku sediments at Curio Bay, in eastern Southland. These are thought to be remnants of a fossil forest of middle Jurassic age (about 160 million years ago) that grew on a river plain subject to flash flooding.
