Tropical cyclone

This satellite image shows the distinctive whirlwind shape of tropical cyclones. Although not covering a vast area, tropical cyclones have very intense low-pressure centres with hurricane winds. They do not often reach as far south as New Zealand, but when they do, they can cause severe weather and flooding.
