This is a view of the ocean floor near a hydrothermal vent. The vent is in the crater of the undersea Volcano W on the Kermadec Ridge, north of New Zealand. The photograph was taken during a dive by the submersible Pisces V on 22 April 2005 as part of a joint venture expedition by GNS Science and NOAA–PMEL (the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory). The suction sampler is vacuuming up some organic microbial mat, while the probe beneath it records the temperature.
