Yellow-eyed penguins: Otapahi

Yellow-eyed penguins enter the sea at Allans Beach in Otapahi reserve on the Otago Peninsula. The reserve, owned by the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust, was established in 1987 to enhance the penguins' habitats in Otago, Southland and Canterbury. Otapahi is not open to the public, to minimise disturbance to the birds, which become stressed when approached by humans. The area has been revegetated by trust volunteers.
