This lone surfer is enjoying waters, which are normally calm enough to be yacht moorings, on the North Island's sheltered north-east coast. Storms are common in the seas off New Zealand. In northern New Zealand the most damaging storms, and the waves they generate, come from the north, while the South Island and southern North Island are more exposed to southerly storms, and their waves.
