Every year Arts Access Aotearoa presents awards to individuals and organisations for providing access to the arts for everyone in New Zealand. In 2012 the 'Big A' award was won by a group of 13 women, the Quilt-Stitch Group, who volunteer their time and pass on their quilting skills to prisoners at Auckland Region Women's Correctional Facility. Members of the group are seen here with sewing machine sponsor Kevin Anderson of the Bernina company.
Programmes like that run by the Quilt-Stitch group help to foster self-esteem, numeracy and literacy among the prisoners, as well as providing them with new creative outlets that they can take out into the community.
