During the 1980s a building boom in Auckland and Wellington saw historic buildings in central business districts give way to multi-storey office buildings. Occasionally a historic building was moved to another site for a new use. Conservationists prefer buildings are kept on their original site for contextual reasons, but will agree to their being moved if there is no other way of saving them. This happened in Wellington with the former residence of Dr Henry Pollen, which in 1988 was moved from its site further uphill on Boulcott Street down to the corner of Boulcott and Willis streets to make room to build the Majestic Centre. The building had had a colourful history – as well as being the doctor's residence, it had been a hostel and a brothel. On its new site it became a popular pub.
