Jenkins Gym

Jenkins Gym

Jenkins Gym, founded in 1932, was still going strong in 2013. By 1979, when this photograph was taken, the gym was in Lower Hutt and was about to move to larger premises. At that stage it had facilities for weightlifting, bodybuilding, off- and pre-season sports training, fitness classes, remedial exercise and children's exercise programmes. Director Roger Marshall (front right) observed that the 1974 Commonwealth Games, along with a 1975  fitness campaign, 'Come Alive', had led to a significant increase in gym membership.
