Attic Coffee House, Christchurch, around 1957

Restaurateur Leon Langley opened the Attic Coffee House in Cashel Street, Christchurch, in 1957. It was one of the city's earliest modern cafés. The Attic was not just a place to get good coffee; like all cafés of this period it was a place to meet friends and enjoy conversation, as the man and woman at left appear to be doing.
