In 1921 the governor-general, Viscount Jellicoe, presented the RSA with an Anzac Day banner to be competed for as a trophy by Auckland primary schools. Children had to write an essay on a topic selected by the RSA. In 1926 students of Belmont Primary School in Auckland won the banner with essays on the deeds of the New Zealand Division in the final years of the First World War. This competition was one of many school activities in the early 20th century that emphasised patriotism and imperialism.
