Clipping meat rationing coupons, 1944

An Auckland diner watches the waitress clip a ration coupon for his meat course, in 1944. Rationing began in April 1942 to cope with shortages of goods from overseas. The first rationed item was sugar, followed later that year by clothing and tea. The next items rationed – butter in October 1943 and meat in March 1944 – were the result of overseas demand for New Zealand products. Eggs and motor spirits were also rationed. Rationing of clothes stopped in 1947 but the last restrictions continued until 1950.
