APEC leaders' retreat, 1999

Representatives of the Asia–Pacific Economic Cooperation group (APEC) are shown here in front of Hotunui, the wharenui (meeting house) at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, in 1999. New Zealand Prime Minister Jenny Shipley stands slightly to the left of centre. The host of each APEC leaders' meeting provides those attending with an outfit – in this case, a black shirt with a silver fern on the breast, and black trousers and jacket. APEC was an Australia–Japan initiative, formed in 1989 to encourage trade and economic liberalisation in the region.
