Kōrero: East Coast region

Apirana Ngata

Apirana Ngata

Apirana Ngata, of Ngāti Porou, was the pre-eminent Māori leader of his generation. He is photographed here in 1923 at his home at Waiomatatini in the Waiapu River valley, with anthropologist Te Rangi Hīroa, who was also known as Peter Buck (Ngāti Mutunga). Ngata stands in front and Buck behind a partially completed tukutuku (woven decorative panel).
