Rob Muldoon (front row, second from left) is immediately recognisable in this class photograph, taken in 1932 when he was a pupil at Kōwhai Intermediate in Auckland. At the age of five he had injured his face by falling against a sharp gate dowel, and was left with a distinctive lopsided smile.
