Kōrero: Missions and missionaries

Alexander Don, Otago, 1880s

Alexander Don, Otago, 1880s

The Presbyterian missionary Alexander Don (far left) stands beside a group of Chinese gold miners in the Otago goldfield of Kyeburn, near Naseby, in the 1880s. Don is holding up religious images with text in the Chinese language, since his congregation knew little or no English. He later set up missions in the regions of China that many of the miners had come from, but baptised very few Chinese in New Zealand.
