In the 20th century the biggest change in organised sport in the cities was the growth in the number of spectators. When New Zealand played England in its second ever cricket test match at the Basin Reserve in January 1930, the ground was ringed with spectators. At this point in the game, most of them must have been very happy. Shortly before, C. S. Dempster had scored New Zealand's first test century, and he was then joined on the score of 100 by his opening partner Mills. Eventually the two combined in a partnership of 276 runs.
