Auckland Amateur Opera Club poster, 1890

This poster advertises the Auckland Amateur Opera Club's production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The sorcerer in November 1890. There was a lively amateur musical scene in the major cities in the second half of the 19th century. Choral societies were the earliest musical institutions, but amateur opera was flourishing by the 1890s.
